Practice & Courage : Today’s page that I sent into Practice & Courage : Today’s page that I sent into my studio in my daily drawing journal is : a stone - imagine it held in your hand, no filters. A stone is patience made solid, smoothed slowly by water and time, and that same smoothness is what let David’s stone fly true. The quiet skill you practice unseen becomes the courage for the day the giant comes . Save this if you need a nudge to make one small mark today. 🎨#ana_de_vlieg # daily drawing#watercolour #sketchbook #drawnfromlife

I drew this wind-sculpted tree by the sea from life, one wandering ink line at a time.

Here’s the wonder: Redwood trees stand 300 feet tall on shallow roots , because they weave their roots into each other. They hold one another up. We were never made to stand alone.

Draw one small thing from life today. And find your people. 🤍

Today’s sky.
Watercolor from life, right here in La Lucia.

Clouds building, sea calm, and one little boat finding its place.
I keep this daily practice to notice the light and let the day leave a mark on the page.

This little tin carries paper and paint for my history making.
No filters, just what I saw.

What does this sky make you feel today?

Community in Unity In a time marked by displaceme Community in Unity

In a time marked by displacement, uncertainty, heartbreak and growing division, this painting reflects the quiet strength of hope found in community. It was inspired by groups of people from diverse churches and backgrounds who gather at dawn at the entrance of our harbour to pray for the destiny, healing and future of our city. In these moments, strangers become neighbours as they listen, encourage, comfort and care for one another.

Painted in transparent watercolour, the figures dissolve softly into one another, allowing individual identities to become secondary to a shared humanity. Light emerges not from a single source but through the relationships between people, reminding us that compassion has no borders and belonging is created wherever love is lived.

As fear and xenophobia challenge our sense of home, this work asks a simple question: Are we not all travellers, each seeking a place of peace, purpose and belonging? It is an invitation to see beyond labels of nationality or status and to recognise the light that connects us all.

Community in Unity celebrates hope as an act of everyday courage and reminds us that even in uncertain times, the brightest light is often found in people standing together. #ana_de_vlieg#wasa #watercoloursa #communitysupport #artandlove
*Exodus 22:21* “Do not mistreat or oppress a fore *Exodus 22:21*
“Do not mistreat or oppress a foreigner, for you were foreigners in Egypt.”
This verse was a balm in my chest this week.

At dawn I drove towards the harbour with @mollycomitiscreates. Purple lined Durban’s horizon, the same purple I’d laid down for my prayer canvas. Fires burned in circles where “foreigners” gathered around, camped at the drive-in.

I painted it. Each brushstroke was a person. A tent. A bruise over our city.

I watched the sun turn from scarlet to gold to white, like fire.

God sees all.

“Lord, let Your scarlet light heal every bruise of oppression and pain. Make us a people who remember Your grace.”

In my rush afterwards the unexpected happened…I left the painting on the roof of the car and obviously it fell off . Oilpaint stays wet so if found the damage would be done.🙈I could not believe this !
Thank you @tansolivier for finding it on the road.
Right outside the building with the great big statue of the lion resting on point Road.

Tyres had rolled over it. It didn’t break.
Its image had scattered like seeds as far and fast as cars can ride.

What was left was a shadow, a light reflection of what was there.

To me a sure sign, more powerful than the painting.

Life on earth is fleeting,

It reminded me: we live into eternity.

The imprint and legacy remains.
No one is forgotten.

Be kind. Live in promise.

It felt so good when I recently offered a workshop It felt so good when I recently offered a workshop called “…travel with me...” including my journey with members of my studio 💛

For 35 years my aim has been simple: help travellers who wish they could keep a visual diary of their journey, but don’t know where to start.

So I developed a sketchbook + just enough materials to fit into a money belt.
Back in 2016 I even called my painting kit “Life in a Tin” — a nod to the days of “The South African Artist” magazine.

Getting anxious about what to take and what will work can be daunting.
It gave me great pleasure to ease that. By teaching 2 vital techniques, sharing secrets I’ve learnt along the way, and giving them everything they need for their next “Sketch ‘n Go”.

This was indeed the start of me becoming a Plein Air painter and lover of painting life on the go 🎨✈️

DM me if you’d like to join a future workshop. Limited spots — we keep it small + personal.

REFLECTIONS AT THE HARBOUR ENTRANCE Last Saturday REFLECTIONS AT THE HARBOUR ENTRANCE

Last Saturday morning of March 2026 began at the place where the sun greets our city — the harbour mouth of KwaZulu Natal — where prayer, symbolism and creativity met in a powerful way.

As I painted and reflected, one word surfaced strongly: REFLECTIONS.
The waters that guide ships safely in and out became a metaphor for movement, purpose and divine direction. A green beacon seemed to whisper GO AHEAD — a reminder that promises over our land are alive and active.

Our prayer unfolded through five powerful movements:
RESTORATION
REGENERATION
RECONSTRUCTION WITH RESOURCES
REVIVAL
REDEEMED by love stamped from heaven over our city.

An unexpected story from my week about a repaired fountain pump reminded me that not everything needs replacing — sometimes what appears broken simply needs creative re-alignment. A beautiful metaphor for how we, too, are restored and re-equipped for purpose.

The symbolism deepened as we reflected on the biblical story of the floating axe head (2 Kings 6), reminding us that God restores what feels lost and returns our cutting edge so we may build again with clarity and strength.

From the ship named iLembe (the sharpest axe) to strangers becoming companions in prayer, this morning felt like a gentle yet powerful reminder:

We are often more equipped than we realise.
And when aligned with purpose, restoration becomes momentum.

As an artist, teacher and creative catalyst, I am continually reminded that creativity is not only expression — it is also activation.#faithandhope #cultivatecreativity #artandlife #pleinairepainter #joy
It was with intention that I set up to visit René It was with intention that I set up to visit René Snyman and Pieter Krugel who welcomed me to view René’s largest artwork done to date. Setting off to Zambia soon, this painting has a story of celebration and a crossover. I felt good, as if I was surfing the wave that had parted for these creatures to pass through the waters. In light and love, they glow with luminosity, and even in shadow, the mystery sparkles joy. This visit was profound, and I peeled myself away feeling full hearted. Pieter, himself a skilled painter and teacher also created the easels to hold the magnificent artwork in its production.
