He holds us in His Arms. Painted this morning , in He holds us in His Arms. Painted this morning , in oils, by hand, whilst I stood before a room of fellow artists. Day 12 of #stradaeasel September challenge.I spoke to them about “seeing”. About how everything begins with a single dot, and how the value of the work, and the one who made it, are the same thing. This small figure of a mother and her child is, for me, a picture of how we are held, and pursued, by a love greater than ourselves. Value from within and outside. ( honouring the sculptor behind #willowtreefigurines ) . Save this if you needed reminding that you are held .💕#ana_de_vlieg #drawnfromlife #durbansouthafrica
Day 11 #stradaeasel @strada.easel I wrestled with Day 11 #stradaeasel @strada.easel I wrestled with these little faces, they took longer than I thought, and I stayed anyway. The practice is the point, not the perfect. Some days the paint fights back and you keep making your marks. Pansies from my table this day. Oils, from life. These little faces, a whole bowl of them looking back at you, purple and gold and orange. Some I fought, some just bloomed. #ana_de_vlieg #stradaeaselchallenge #pansies #oil painting
Day 10 #stradaeasel #stradaeaselchallenge2026 @str Day 10 #stradaeasel #stradaeaselchallenge2026 @strada.easel had me rushing home after a 4:30 am wake up and walk Jay and friends in our local forest. The why was so I could catch the light and paint these beauties of which the timelapse is on my other phone ( in the my locked up studio). Next - straight into a full day of gorgeous teaching before meeting and getting interviewed by an inspired young teacher and artist @kris10davi_art 💕I almost forgot to post this challenge before the day drew to a close🤗🙈
So these pink flowers taught me about trumpeting , So these pink flowers taught me about trumpeting , celebrating the DAY 9 #stradaeasel #stradaeaselchallenge2026 and actually thanking them for this initiative. I am loving the painting each day. I have no idea what I shall do once I get into the Botswana Desert, later in the month. These Antirrrhinum Snap Hot Pink will definately not be over there! Neither will petunias and punch pink pansies. There is flowers just as dainty and yet super strong 💪.

Day 8 #stradaeasel had me buying these fresh flowe Day 8 #stradaeasel had me buying these fresh flowers for my granddaughter. Of course she lives in Australia and her beautiful mum suggested I paint flowers for her room. Georgia O Keeffe said once that it takes time to see a flower, it is so small. We haven’t time, and to see takes time. Yet we are encouraged to consider the Lillies of the field, how they grow ( Mathew 6:28) and so…this morning I took a little colour for this quiet morning observation painting of mine from life. The cat was in wonder too! All the animals rejoiced . So many shapes was seen and there we go - fresh flowers presented for you to see- I do hope you hold joy as you look💛💕💝

Painted from my balcony this morning, oils, from life. There is a colour the sky gives us over this coast, a lilac that settles on the water just after dawn, and I have wanted to catch it properly for a long time. A cargo ship for company on the far line.

This is what the daily prompt is really for. On Da This is what the daily prompt is really for. On Day 28, and alas! I never got to post this “face you love,” drawn from life my dear friend and fellow artist Joan came to the studio, and while she painted her own cat in bold coral and teal, I drew her: her profile, her glasses, her plaited tail, in one searching, unhurried line. Two artists, one morning, each making the other’s world. Do not chase a likeness, we always say. Just look with love. 🤍

At last, I painted my red shoes. I sketched them o At last, I painted my red shoes. I sketched them on the day of the shoe prompt and never added the colour as I had wanted. They have sat on my table waiting ever since. Am I the only one that does this? These are the very shoes I slipped off on a warm cliff at Kettleness in Yorkshire, one perfect ordinary afternoon with my family, when the grass felt like cloud and the ground turned holy. Take off your sandals, the old words say, for the place where you are standing is holy ground. Painted from life, and from a memory of grass and sea. By hand, no filters, no AI. 🌿

What is the ordinary object that holds your whole story? Tell me below.

Today’s page in my daily drawing journal: candleli Today’s page in my daily drawing journal: candlelight, watercolour, by hand, no filters, no AI. Concentric rings of gold and ochre and grey-violet, swirling around one small blue-white flame at the heart. It glows from the inside. A lovely echo of my Day 18 circles from above, and proof of how far into feeling my line has travelled this month.

A candle gives all its light without ever asking whether it is enough. You are the light of the world, and no one lights a lamp to hide it under a bowl; they set it on a stand so it lights the whole room. So let your little light shine, for its own sake first, so that you feel strong and secure and significant, and then for everyone in the room. We are born to be celebrated. 🕯️

Light a candle today for someone worth celebrating. Who comes to mind? Tell me below.

Be like the birds of the air. Feel the wind beneat Be like the birds of the air. Feel the wind beneath your wings, and fly free, slow and fast, without a worry for your tomorrow. In drawing, make the line as active as you feel, be quick to catch the shape, squint, and let it go.

What did you catch before it flew? Tell me below. I am tagging #joanmartin_artist who has drawn plenty birds in my studio, as outlines for her art lessons online

This morning four of us gathered in my studio: an This morning four of us gathered in my studio: an art teacher, a South African sculptress, narrative artist, photographer. We talked about two things I keep turning over.

Crossing the chicken line. That moment in a painting where your nerve fails and you pull the mark back, water the dark down, tighten the loose wash into a safe outline. Crossing the line is daring to make the braver mark anyway. We spoke about this metaphor in life. #joanmartin_artist ‘s chicken drawing gave life to my doorways prompt from Henri Matisse- that Creativity indeed needs courage.

And the Glorians, from Terry Tempest Williams’ book “The Glorians: Visitations from the Holy Ordinary.” A Glorian is a small, ordinary moment of grace that mostly slips past unnoticed, and can only be met with surprise and awe.

That is the whole of why I draw from life. Today’s page, my window thrown open onto the garden and the far line of the sea, an open book waiting on the sill, is me trying to catch one Glorian before it slipped by, and crossing my own chicken line as I painted it. By hand, no filters, no AI. 🎨

What small, ordinary moment of grace did you notice today? Tell me below.

Today’s page in my daily drawing journal: the hori Today’s page in my daily drawing journal: the horizon and its palms, one continuous ink line, drawn by hand, no filters, no AI. I started my line on the left, the way you read a page, and let it travel right, following everything in its path. A plein air secret: you have about ninety minutes before the light changes, so look for five or so big shapes and let the small detail go. The drawing comes out cleaner, quicker, and truer for what you leave out.

So today, let your line begin at the left and walk gently to the right, following the horizon and the few big shapes that stand upon it. Do not fuss, and do not fear the detail you leave behind. Trust the single step, the single line, and the promise that it is carrying you toward something good, a future, and a hope.

What are the five big shapes in front of you today? Tell me below.
